Taking to X, the Mavin Records founder addressed upcoming label owners, urging them to rethink how they position themselves around their artists.

According to him, musicians perform and grow best when they are treated like stars from day one, not managed with an iron fist.

Don Jazzy noted that while many young executives openly say they pattern their leadership style after him, they sometimes miss the essence of how he truly operates. He explained that the version of him the public sees is very different from the one his artists experience behind closed doors.

“I spend most of the time letting my artists be the superstars they are,” he shared, emphasizing that his role is largely to support, guide, and protect creative freedom. He added that he only adopts a stricter approach when the situation genuinely calls for it.

His remarks have since sparked wider conversations within the music industry, shining a light on the value of empathy, trust, and supportive leadership in building lasting and successful artist–label partnerships.
